What is 5-Axis CNC Machining?
5-axis CNC machining refers to a manufacturing process where computer-controlled cutting tools move simultaneously across five different axes. Unlike conventional 3-axis machining (which moves along the X, Y, and Z linear axes), 5-axis technology adds two rotational axes—typically labeled A and B—allowing the cutting tool or workpiece to rotate and approach the material from virtually any angle.
Think of it as the difference between a robotic arm with only elbow movement versus one with full wrist and shoulder rotation. This enhanced flexibility enables machinists to create complex, organic shapes with superior surface finishes in a single setup—dramatically reducing production time while improving accuracy.

Simultaneous 5-Axis Contouring
Two Primary Types of 5-Axis Machining:
3+2 Axis Machining (Positional)
In 3+2 machining, the two rotational axes position the cutting tool at a fixed angle, then lock in place while the three linear axes perform the cutting operation. This approach offers improved access to multiple part faces without requiring multiple setups.
Continuous 5-Axis Machining (Simultaneous)
True 5-axis simultaneous machining coordinates all five axes in continuous motion during cutting operations. This technique enables the creation of complex contoured surfaces and organic geometries with exceptional precision and surface finish.
Our 5-Axis CNC Machining Capabilities

Related processes: features a cutter cannot reach are cut on our wire EDM machines; tight shaft and bore fits, and finishes finer than milling can hold, come from CNC grinding. If you want the geometry proven before a production run, start with rapid prototyping and low-volume production.

4
Precision Machining
Your parts are machined on five-axis equipment set up for the job, and the dimensions you mark as critical are checked against your drawing before it ships.
5
Quality Inspection
Every part undergoes rigorous inspection using CMM and other precision measuring equipment to verify specifications.
6
Delivery
Parts are carefully packaged and shipped with full documentation including inspection reports and material certifications.
What's the difference between 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining?
3-axis machining moves the cutting tool along X, Y, and Z axes, suitable for simpler geometries. 5-axis machining adds two rotational axes (A and B), allowing the tool to approach the workpiece from any angle. This eliminates the need for multiple setups, enables complex undercuts and contours, and provides superior surface finishes. It is ideal for aerospace, medical, and complex robotics components.
What file formats do you accept for designs?
3D+2D drawings, preferred formats below:
- STEP (.stp)
- IGES (.igs)
- PDF drawings (with GD&T callouts)
What are your standard lead times?
Standard lead time is 2–4 weeks. Rush orders are confirmed case by case — tell us your deadline up front and we will say straight away whether we can hit it.
Do you offer design assistance?
We review every drawing before quoting. If we find a feature that cannot be machined as drawn, or one that adds cost without adding function, we point it out and suggest an alternative for you to confirm. If the drawing is machinable as it stands, we quote it as-is — we do not redesign parts that already work.
What is your minimum order quantity?
We don’t have a minimum order quantity. We can produce a single prototype or thousands of parts depending on your needs.
What is your return policy?
At MetaliCNC, every product goes through strict verification—from trial production and inspection testing to customer confirmation—before shipment. Our quality assurance process ensures that all parts meet the agreed specifications before delivery, minimizing the risk of nonconformities. We take pride in our precision and reliability, and every shipment is the result of a joint confirmation between our engineers and customers.
In the rare event that a delivered part does not meet the agreed specifications, we follows a transparent and responsible after-sales process. Customers can submit a claim with inspection data, photos, or videos clearly indicating the nonconforming features. Our quality team will review the case within 48 hours to identify root causes—whether related to design, machining, material, or logistics.
Based on the assessment, we provide appropriate solutions such as rework, remake, partial refund, or credit, in line with the order terms. All cases are fully documented and backed by inspection records to ensure traceability. To help us resolve issues faster, customers should retain original samples and all supporting evidence. Each case also feeds into our continuous improvement system to further enhance product quality and customer satisfaction
