What is 5-Axis CNC Machining?

5-axis CNC machining refers to a manufacturing process where computer-controlled cutting tools move simultaneously across five different axes. Unlike conventional 3-axis machining (which moves along the X, Y, and Z linear axes), 5-axis technology adds two rotational axes—typically labeled A and B—allowing the cutting tool or workpiece to rotate and approach the material from virtually any angle.

Two Primary Types of 5-Axis Machining:

What's the difference between 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining?

3-axis machining moves the cutting tool along X, Y, and Z axes, suitable for simpler geometries. 5-axis machining adds two rotational axes (A and B), allowing the tool to approach the workpiece from any angle.
